Enhancing Emotional Intelligence

A Personal Take from AMP Coach Scott Austin Martin: Hey, fellas. Scott here, and let’s talk about something that used to sound about as fun to me as a root canal: emotional intelligence. I know, I know—emotions? Again? But stick with me here. Learning how to recognize, understand, and express our emotions in a healthy way is a game-changer. Seriously.

Look, I didn’t start out as the “emotional awareness” type, either. Growing up, emotions weren’t exactly a hot topic at the dinner table. They were more like the weird cousin you pretend not to see at family gatherings. But as I got older, ignoring those emotions didn’t make life easier—it made it a lot harder. I kept hitting walls in relationships, feeling stuck, and wondering why I couldn’t shake off that constant stress. I knew something had to change.

Turns out, enhancing emotional intelligence is like putting on glasses you never knew you needed. Things get a whole lot clearer.

Step 1: Recognizing Emotions (Yes, Those Annoying Little Feelings)

Let’s start with recognizing emotions. I used to think I had two emotions: fine and not fine. My “not fine” could range from mildly annoyed to ready to Hulk-smash something, but hey, they both fell under the same category. If you’re in the same boat, I get it. But here’s the thing: just because we ignore emotions doesn’t mean they disappear. It’s like ignoring the check engine light in your car; eventually, something’s gonna break.

To start, I began checking in with myself—asking questions like, “What am I actually feeling?” (Spoiler alert: there’s a whole range between “fine” and “rage-monster.”) This can be as simple as noticing, “Hey, I feel…frustrated” or “Huh, that actually hurt my feelings.” Recognizing those emotions is the first step toward not letting them control us. Plus, once you start noticing them, they’re not so scary. They’re just signals trying to tell us something.

Step 2: Understanding the “Why” Behind the Emotion

Okay, so you’ve figured out what you’re feeling. Now comes the part that always used to trip me up: figuring out whyyou’re feeling it. It took me a while to understand that emotions are like little alarms—they usually go off when something needs attention.

For instance, if I was feeling frustrated at my partner for being late, it wasn’t really about the clock. It was about my need for respect and reliability. Or maybe, if I was feeling anxious about a big work project, the real reason was my fear of failure. Understanding the “why” doesn’t make the emotions vanish, but it helps you respond instead of just reacting like a man on a mission with no brakes. It’s the difference between seeing frustration as “me against the world” and seeing it as a sign that I need to set some boundaries.

Step 3: Expressing Emotions (Without Sounding Like a Cheese Ball)

I used to think expressing emotions meant one of two things: full-on venting or silently brooding. I hadn’t quite figured out the middle ground. Turns out, expressing emotions doesn’t have to be a big dramatic monologue. It can be as simple as saying, “I feel a little off today” or “Hey, I’m frustrated about this and here’s why.”

Here’s a trick: use “I” statements. Instead of saying, “You’re making me feel crazy,” try, “I feel frustrated when things don’t go as planned.” It takes the edge off and keeps things focused on how you feel, not what someone else did wrong. (And trust me, that little trick has saved me from more than a few arguments.)

Step 4: Empathy and Social Awareness (AKA: Not Being a Robot)

Once you start recognizing and understanding your own emotions, you start to see them in other people too. And this is where empathy kicks in. When we take a moment to listen to someone else’s perspective, we stop taking everything so personally. It’s amazing how much smoother life gets when you start picking up on those little cues from others—body language, tone, facial expressions. It’s like being handed the cheat codes to better relationships.

Building empathy doesn’t mean you have to turn into some kind of therapist for your friends and family. It’s more about saying, “I get it, I hear you.” Even if you don’t fully understand what they’re going through, letting them know you’re there makes a huge difference. And, by the way, it makes people want to support you more, too.

Step 5: Self-Regulation (Or, How Not to Blow a Gasket)

Let’s talk about self-regulation—the art of not losing it when life doesn’t go your way. I used to think self-regulation was about pushing everything down until it vanished. Turns out, it’s more like having the skills to keep your cool under pressure. It’s about noticing the feelings, pausing, and choosing how to respond instead of just reacting.

One trick I learned is to take a few deep breaths before responding when things get heated. Just a quick pause. It sounds simple, but it works wonders. And here’s the funny thing: most of the time, once I’ve paused, the urge to lash out fades, and I can respond with a clear head.

So, Why Bother?

If you’re thinking, “This sounds like a lot of work,” you’re not wrong. But let me tell you—it’s worth it. Building emotional intelligence has been one of the most freeing experiences of my life. I used to think life was just a grind, something to tough out. But learning to understand myself, connect with others, and keep my cool has made life a whole lot richer (and my relationships a whole lot smoother).

And look, this isn’t about becoming some perfect, zen-like emotional guru. It’s about being a guy who can handle what life throws at him without feeling like he’s always fighting against the current. It’s about making decisions that align with who you truly are, without all the second-guessing and stress.

If you’re feeling like life’s been rough around the edges lately, or if relationships keep hitting the same walls, it might be time to dig into this emotional intelligence stuff. It’s a journey worth taking, and I’m here to help however I can.

So let’s get out there, learn a thing or two, and see where this road takes us.
